Semana Santa, Part 2

After a pretty extreme low - those of you that have skyped with me recently know all the gory details - I pulled myself together and set off with Kevin for another week of adventures in Oaxaca and Chiapas.

Since I had already visited the capital of Oaxaca, we decided to explore the nearby mountains by visiting a collective of towns called the pueblos mancomunados. Eight tiny villages belong to the organization, which is impressively well-run and provides opportunities for eco- and cultural tourism, as well as cute little cabins equipped with fireplaces! We booked through Sierra Norte and had a wonderful few days hiking, eating, and relaxing in Benito Juarez, Cuajimoloyas, and Llano Grande:

Then, we headed back to the city for a few hours before our overnight bus to Chiapas. We didn't have much time, but we were able to squeeze in some great Oaxacan food and shopping:

The next day, we arrived in Chiapas and quickly made our way to San Cristobal de las Casas. We spent a few days there, soaking up the town's prettiness and bizarre mix of gringo hippies and Mayan locals and making a couple of day trips (San Juan Chamula, Chiapa de Corzo, and the Cañón del Sumidero.) San Juan Chamula was especially cool - the church there has a fascinating blend of Catholic and indigenous traditions, full of candles, pine needles, chanting worshippers, iconography, and Coca Cola - but we weren't allowed to take photos, so make sure to Google it!

(Also, somewhere along the way, I had my twenty-third birthday... crazy, right?!)

We finished up the week in Mexico City, where we enjoyed some really great tacos, Kevin tried pulque for the first time, and we had an incredible brunch:

And then... Kevin made his way back to the United States and I went back to Toluca for the last month of my Fulbright!
