It's time to play some major catch-up.
Thursday, we visited a hospital in Tijuana and heard a lecture about public issues in the city and how they moved across the border. Then, we went with a needle exchange program to an old canal in TJ where lots of addicts live. It was one of the most intense experiences of my life. I can't adequately put it into words. Afterwards, we drove to a public health clinic and passed through a sort of "red light district" on our way... I could never imagine such blatant images of prostitution. All in all, it was an emotionally challenging day for everyone involved.
Friday, we visited a maquiladora (foreign-owned factory) in Tecate where they manufacture Taylor Guitars. That was actually a completely fun and fascinating afternoon.
Saturday, I went to an open-air mercado in the morning to buy some produce (but you already saw pictures of that); then, later in the afternoon, I finally took the 40 minute-ish walk from my house to the beach.
Sunday, I mostly ate a lot; we had tamales, pan dulce, and champurrado for breakfast, and then barbecued for dinner (I got 4 handmade veggie burgers for $1! Why am I so obsessed with inexpensive food...?)
Since then, I've gone to class, read my assigned articles, eaten a deep-fried quesadilla, gotten sushi, and crossed into the U.S. to go to Walmart (or, more accurately, talk to my parents on my cell phone in the parking lot of Walmart.)
Pictures to come!
The past few days...
