On Sunday, one of the local churches had a sort of street fair fundraiser, so I headed over with the people I'm staying with.
I told Eugenia (the woman I'm staying with/my only friend here) that I'd eat whatever she recommended me. For the equivalent of $5, I had a potato tostada, enchiladas, fresh potato chips, sangria with green apples, and a mango on a stick.
The mango was very difficult for me to eat... it was cut into a rose shape and covered in spiciness and I kept getting it all over my face. Eugenia thought it was quite funny, so she demanded a picture of my futile attempts.
That night, the church set off fireworks and I watched them from my patio while I did my homework. The pictures make them seem a little more psychedelic than they actually were...
On Monday, we visited a bilingual school which teaches in Spanish and an indigenous language. Tuesday, we heard a lecture about NAFTA and its effect on border economies, and then had a discussion about differences in the concept of justice in the US and Mexico. Yesterday, we had another lecture about the economics of the border region, and then another about homosexuality in Mexico. Today, we're heading to a public health clinic and needle exchange program... after reading last night about the way injection drug users are abused by the police here, I think it might be an intense experience... we'll see how it goes.
Sorry for the lack of updates, I've been wasting my time doing really important things like formatting my itunes library, reading through all of Better Book Titles' posts, and listening to the Voyager Golden Records. I think it's time I did something more productive, like learn Spanish. Or something.
